Second City Blog

I made it!

I can’t believe I never posted a blog on the audition. It went really well and I am currently creating a revue at Second City. More information on the show and the title will be posted on my website soon!! Thanks again for everyone’s support. It is really late, but I will try to write more often now that things are starting to slow down. yay!

Second City Writing Audition

So the time has come for me to start writing for the Second City stage. I can’t believe it has flown by this fast. It seems like only yesterday; I was going to class writing and taking things in slowly. In order to get into level 4 a person must turn in one sketch, and they pass it around the room and criticize your work to see if you have what it takes to write for the Second City.

I am not sure what sketch I am going to turn in yet, but thankfully the writers strike is supposed to end on Wednesday officially, so I am going to post every sketch I have written and let you vote! I really appreciate the time it takes you to read a sketch and then tell me how you feel. I know it is time consuming and it means the world to me that a lot of you take the time.

Since there was a writers strike I know its going to be hard for you guys to catch up on my sketches. I will post them all on Wednesday and when you have time please vote after you read all of them and let me know what you think!!

If you would like me to email you as soon as the sketches are up let me know. If not then just go to www.jillianspellman.net on Wednesday throughout the day and as soon as you see that it has been updated you will see the sketches. I will put PG, PG13, R etc next to the sketches. If it is PG there is no bad language, if there is PG13 there is some bad language and if it is Rated R Then don’t read it unless you don’t think you will be offended!

 THANK YOU! EEEKK IM NERVOUS!

Level 3- Climbing the ladder

So I know it has been awhile, but things at Second City are going fine. I actually wrote a long blog a few minutes ago, but for some reason it didn’t save right. Don’t you hate when that happens? You do the spell check thing, you read it a few times to make sure everything is alright you post it and then BAM it’s gone. I am usually a copy and paste whore, but the one time I decide to trust… all my words are out the window. Here it goes again. Take two. Lets see if I can remember everything.

If I had to rate my teachers the one I have now, Jay Steigman would come in first. Second would be Nancy (I can’t remember her last name) and third would be Mary Scruggs. I have only have three teachers and they have all been girls. By the name Jay I thought I had finally caught my break and was going to have a male teacher, but no 100% female. She is awesome though so thank god, but I need some boyish advice. The only downside of this semester is our classroom is smaller than my room and there are 15 people in my class.

Which brings me something I feel like I have the right to be negative about. How can you go to Second City skip classes and barley do the work and still move forward. There this girl that was in my last class and she moved forward… WHATEVER. Then she is a new class with my roommate Erika and she is doing the same thing again. There has been four classes so far and she has turned in one sketch. I swear if that girl moves into the next level my ass is in the office causing some problems. I am not busting my ass there just so, some girl with a grain of talent can be in the same level as me. It is ridiculous.

BACK TO HAPPY…BACK TO HAPPY

Okay so I got promoted as work which is cool since I have only been working there for two weeks. It’s going to be a little weird being management, but if the pay and insurance is good then here is to busting my ass!! After getting off of work yesterday from busting my ass I must be getting close to my periods due date because I saw someone getting arrested for a drug bust which in my area is totally normal, but what wasn’t normal was that I started to cry and started thinking, “Tina Fey what did you do this to me” Luckily it was raining, so I didn’t cause a commotion. I then went home and cleaned my feeling away.

So much for me being a positive person. Can this be my bad day?

Out of class

Class is out for vacation and I will be starting back in early January. I am looking forward to another teacher point of view. So far Nancy has been my favorite. I haven’t had a male teacher yet so I am hoping this time around I do. It’s been a little to girlie!

It twas the night before class…

Well tomorrow is class and my sketch is done. I don’t do well writing with other people. I simply don’t like it. I feel like I wrote the whole thing and Erika added about 3 lines and I just hate it. I know I need to get over it, but I wondering how do people do that. I guess I am a credit whore, but seriously how do people sit in a room and write and one person writes most of it and everyone’s name get slapped on it. How does this make sense? Oh I need someone to slap some sense into me.

It’s Sunday Night

It is Sunday night and my sketch is still not done. Erika and I have been assigned to collaborate this week and it has to be a parody of a genre. We were going to parody Road Rules and Fear Factor, but then towards the end of the sketch when we were almost done I remembered Mary’s words… “No media”. So now we have to think of something different. When giving examples she said we could parody a lifetime movie.. so in the mists of realizing that we had written an unacceptable sketch we decided we would parody a soap opera or religion which we will start to work on tomorrow. Hopefully this will be done more than two hours before class because I really don’t want to waste my whole day on this f-ing sketch. What’s even more frustrating is that I am sure our teacher will find something wrong with it. That’s what sucks about having the head writer of Second City as your teacher.

Wow, don’t hate me! =)

So, I know I promised to start this last month, but I am so sorry. Things have been hectic and Level 1 and Level 2 at Second City were so easy that I guess I expected the same in Level 3. I am not doing as bad as some people that have already dropped out, but it’s definitely not easy. Second City is now in the ‘lets get rid of the people that are just in it for money, and or are not serious about this’ phase. I straight out told my teacher, Mary: “You can make me cry, and rip my sketches apart, but you are not getting rid of me”.  She smirked knowing she was stuck with me. We started with a good number of people and so far have lost about 5 people. My sketch did well last week. It was the first one where my format was perfect and true to the Second City form. Midpoint and Objectives are a bitch. That being said, it is something that is needed and if I want to pursue this further I need to follow the rules.

Jerry Seinfeld had a rough time writing the “bee” movie following these rules because he was so used to writing in one liner format. If someone like him had trouble it makes me work harder and feel I am not the only one. I also try to think that maybe Tina Fey and Will Forte may of had a problem with it to. I am just strengthening my writing skills and working my asses brain out.

Some advice though don’t attend Second City to be rich and famous and make a lot of money. Do it because it is something you love to do and want more than anything in the world. If that wasn’t the case for me I would have dropped out a long time ago. Also, I would be perfectly fine writing behind the scenes at “SNL” or a comedy TV show like, uh, I don’t know, “30 Rock”. Since I have been writing at SC the more I have wanted to stay behind the scenes rather than on stage. That may change once I start improv next year, but this is where I am now.

Hey

Hey everyone. This is just a test. I will start blogging about Second City in early October.
